Sabbath

  • Based on the seventh day of creation when God rested after creating the world

Pesach (Passover)

  • In spring in the Northern Hemisphere

  • Celebrated for eight days

  • Based on the story of Exodus, where Israelites were freed from slavery in Egypt

Shavuot (Pentecost)

  • In late May or early June

  • Based on the day God, through Moses, gave the Ten Commandments to the Israelites

Sukkot

  • In late September or October

  • Based on the story of the Israelites wandering in the desert

Rosh Hashanah (Jewish New Year)

  • In September or October

  • Celebrates when God created man

Yom Kippur (Day of Atonement)

  • In October

  • Founded on Prayer and Repentance

Purim

  • In February or March

  • Based on the deliverance of the Persian Jews from Haman

Hanukkah

  • In November or December

  • Celebrated for eight days

  • Based on the rededication of the Temple after it was destroyed by Antiochus IV
